The Center for Childhood Development is offering beneficial summer programs in a dynamic approach to improve and enhance overall development. The 2008 offerings are listed for reference as the 2009 programs will likely be similar. Check back in spring 2009 for an updated list of groups.

Visual Imagery to Assist Reading and Decoding Skills
These sessions will focus on using visual imagery to improve decoding and subsequently reading skills. We will build stronger visual memory in a fun way, which can also improve reading comprehension and expressive language/verbal organization.

Fine Motor / Handwriting Skills
Fun, interactive groups led by an Occupational Therapist. Sensory motor activities combined with the Handwriting Without Tears Program will be utilized to promote the development of visual and motor skills necessary for efficient handwriting and fine motor functioning.

Sensory Integration Groups
Summer fun activities featuring group games, socialization, and sensorimotor activities all specialized to meet your child’s developmental level.

Alert Program: How Does Your Engine Run?
Your child will learn about their own sensory system (engine) and strategies to keep it running ‘just right’. This group will promote independence in utilizing sensory motor activities to promote regulation throughout the day. Specific strategies to use for ‘back to school’ will also be addressed.

Social Sports
This group will emphasize the development of emotional regulation and control, shared social problem solving, planning, organization, coping skills, and self-monitoring. It will begin with a 30 min. lesson followed by an opportunity to practice skills in an exciting, engaging activity. The last 15 min. of each session will include parent education with handouts emphasizing key points and language to use.
Private Reading Tutoring
The National Reading Panel has established 5 core areas of reading development: Phonemic Awareness, Fluency, Comprehension, Phonics, and Vocabulary.

Pre-Reading Group
This Pre-Reading Group is for 4-5 yr. olds who are ready to establish early literacy skills. Sessions will run for eight weeks and will focus on introducing phonemic awareness, pre-phonics, and age level literature comprehension.

This group will focus on auditory and language processing along with oral motor activities in conjunction with sensorimotor play.
