Berard Auditory Integration Training (AIT)
Auditory Integration Training (AIT) is an intervention that uses specially modulated and filtered music to retrain an individual’s ability to process sound input. Dr. Guy Berard, a French ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor, developed the Berard method of AIT in the 1960’s. The intervention was first provided in the US in 1991. Dr. Berard believes that distortions in ‘hearing’ causes auditory processing problems.
At the Center for Childhood Development, AIT is done as part of an Occupational and/or Speech therapy treatment intensive which is offered year round. We have had excellent response to AIT and parents have been very pleased with their child’s progress following this 10 day program. Due to the comprehensive nature of this program, in which both auditory and vestibular/movement stimulation is provided, children often make gains in several areas of development. These can include improved sensory processing, increased speech and language and social skills, decreased hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity to sound, improved auditory perceptual skills and the ability to stay focused.
