Development of Emotional Regulation and Dysregulation: Children and Families
Given by Ira Glovinsky, Ph.D. and Nanci Hester, MSW, LLMSW Hosted at the Center for Childhood Development
Bipolar disorder has been a very controversial diagnosis in children.
We are seeing an epidemic of children who are being diagnosed as bipolar and who are given an assortment of medications. The question is, are these children truly bipolar and if not, what are they? In this presentation we will first talk about the history of the 'concept' of bipolar disorder. We will then discuss the diagnostic criteria and differentiate adult bipolar disorder from its childhood variant.
We will then take a developmental perspective and discuss the areas of functioning that appear to be deficient in these children. From here we will discuss sibling and larger family relationships and then discuss possible treatment modalities as well as medications that are presently being used for the disorder.
Both the evening presentation and one-day conference will be hosted and held at the Center for Childhood Development:
